Whatever your own traditions for celebrating Easter, it’s always fun to travel to other places and discover the traditions held there. If you’re heading off on holiday, look for Majorca hotels or stay in Ibiza, as these are two of many destinations which have some great festivities at this time of year.
Many people like to spend the springtime in Cyprus, a place where their own traditions are special, and have their own twist. There is certainly plenty going on, including a fireworks display when the clock strikes midnight on the Saturday, marking the beginning of Easter Sunday. Another important tradition of the Cypriots is watching football with the family on Easter Monday, something that visitors will surely have fun participating in, even if your “family” is the other visitors at Cyprus hotels.
One of the most important religious events in Spain, Semana Santa means “Holy Week”, and involves all kinds of celebrations. If you’re in the Algarve this includes the Folar Festival, and visitors will be able to try a Folar cake, which are cakes topped with hard boiled eggs! There is music and dancing into the night.
If you’re booking your Algarve hotels and are not sure where to stay, try somewhere close to Tavira, as they have their own special traditions, which includes carrying artwork, representing moments of Christ’s life, through the streets, and there is also a lot of lively music and fun to be had.
You can also celebrate Semana Santa in Mallorca, although there are other local events happenings there as well. Palm Sunday sees the traditional blessings of palm and olive trees, and there are parades in the evening. But it’s Easter Tuesday which makes Mallorca special at this time of year, as this is when food is given to the poorest families and those who live alone, a true heartwarming gesture of generosity.
