The top news this morning is that my bed doesn’t despise me. I am not sure about the cause of the shoulder pain still, but the situation with my neck is Cricket Ache caused by dropping off in front of the TV whilst watching the cricket and being unable to sustain wakefulness. At least I did manage to see the conclusion of the match. It won’t be happening again, I am very much a Test match follower and will not be bothering to sit up for the limited over games. Besides, this is a Friday, in the coming weeks I’ll be trying to get an early start at work so that I can sneak off in the afternoon to go angling.
What with my wife returning to work because of a prolonged sick leave due to breast cancer treatment since April in 2 weeks, and the prospect of the weather getting milder through February and March, the temptation of the canal towpath will probably be overwhelming now that I have made the decision to update the fishing tackle and begin fishing again.
When I was going through my fishing tackle recently, I found an old rod licence which was dated 1994, which very likely was the previous time I went fishing. It appears a really long time and yet I recall it clearly, a lovely day in June when I went for a day’s fishing on the Thames at Walton, and I landed my single ever barbel. This might seem peculiar, but most of the angling I did as a boy was on a fishery in Cranleigh where I grew up, and barbel are a river fish.
In those days, I did not have a a lot of fishing tackle as I never had a lot of money and yet I still have most of it from then. I find it staggering that even when I started to earn decent money, I never really thought about fishing or spending some money and buying some really great fishing tackle and having more time by the water.
When I do go back, I will need to lay out some change\money, the priority is getting a rod licence and joining the Birmingham Anglers Association who manage fishing on the canals in the area here, then I’ll need some fresh fishing tackle as mine is elderly and possibly outlawed now, especially the hooks which all seem to have barbs which I’m fairly sure are not allowed now.
I can’t wait to go back, though I’m not ashamed to admit that I was always and definitely will be now, a very fair weather fisher, so I will need dry, warm conditions. It doesn’t have to be sunny, just not soaking and cold and if it’s a Friday after the present Mrs Izzard has gone back to work (and I’m legal) then the likelihood is I am going to go angling. Love it.
